North Maluku
North Maluku (abbreviated as Malut) is a province in Eastern Indonesia. The capital of this province is located in Sofifi Halmahera. This province was officially formed on October 12 1999, previously being a district of Maluku Province. The term Maluku originally referred to the four sultanate centers in North Maluku, namely Ternate, Tidore, Bacan and Jailolo. A form of confederation of the four kingdoms emerged in the 14th century. These two provinces, Maluku and Malut, were the largest spice producers. It was spices such as cloves and nutmeg that brought Maluku into the trade chain within the archipelago and between nations. Even when European nations arrived in the archipelago in the early 16th century, the Maluku region became contested because of its rich spices.
